Great Stamping Polishes

This is probably a long overdue post but I thought I'd share my favourite stamping polishes - both readily available and somewhat hard to find.

My requirements for a good stamping polish is that they absolutely must stamp well on BOTH black and white backgrounds.  Many polishes stamp decently on light colours but the true test is whether or not it shows well on black.

Sally Hansen Chrome polishes are fantastic for stamping.  They stamp well on both white and dark colours.  There are also old Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear polishes (white cap) that are almost exactly the same as these.  All of these can often be found in bargain bins.  I found all of mine in bargain bins for $.25 a couple of years ago with the exception of the square purple bottle on the right which I had purchased way back when these polishes were originally released.

And now on to the more readily available polishes:

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Celeb City (top) is good but has a fine glitter in it and is a little more subtle than most of the 'chrome' type polishes.  The other 3 are all Pure Ice, which is clearly available at Walmart for $2US lol.  I've heard they carry these in Canada now but I'm not sure how much they are.  From L-R or top to bottom: Silver Mercedes, First Time and Pussy Cat.

Once again we have Sally Hansen but it's the fabulous Insta-dri collection.  These are hands down the BEST polishes for stamping that you can find in your local drug store for about $6 (or $4 on sale).  The cremes especially stamp like no other brand - very opaque. Out of the 15 or so colours of Insta-dri I own, only one colour doesn't stamp well on black, even though my  photo is shitty they do show really well.  Above is L-R, top to bottom: Presto Pink, Jade Jump, Mint Sprint and Brisk Blue.

Kleancolor Metallics are worth an honorable mention.  Although not all of them stamp well on black the bold colours are just not available in other brands.

Where the Kleancolors really shine (literally) is once you add top coat.  Those vibrant kind of colours don't typically come in the chrome finishes.

And of course the essential black and white polishes.  The good ones are harder to come by than you think because just any old black or white polish isn't necessarily going to be opaque enough to stamp with.  For blacks I've got L-R, top to bottom: Wet and Wild Black Creme, the original Konad Black and an old hard to find Sally Hansen No Chip in Black Berry.  Truth be told nothing works better than the original Konad Black.  When I use stamps that have fine lines like above or intricate designs, it absolutely has to be Konad.  For everything else, Wet and Wild is my 'go-to' black.  The Sally Hansen is a bit better than the Wet and Wild however it's close to empty and I've given up hope that I'll find another.  As for white, I have so many that just don't cut it, my original Konad white is empty and the best white I have ever found is Billie French White.  Unfortunately Billie is a Canadian polish that was sold in Dollar Giant stores across Canada.  Dollar Giant was purchased about a year ago by the US Dollar Tree and although you can still find Billie polish at the Dollar Tree, I believe it's likely they won't be stocking more and are slowly depleting their supply.  I've tried probably 6 different Dollar Trees now in SW Ontario and there is no Billie French White to be found. I do have one backup bottle left but my next bottle of white will likely be the Sally Hansen Insta-dri since I've read that their white is decent.

And there you have it.  The verdict is - cheap polish works best!  And my two most used polishes - Wet and Wild and Billie - are less than $2 CAD!  Notice there are no OPI's, Essie's or China Glaze's in this post.  If you're just getting into stamping and looking for which polishes work you can't go wrong with the Insta-dri's.  I also recommend picking up Wet and Wild Black Creme which is usually just under $2 and also Pure Ice Silver Mercedes at Walmart.  And if anyone finds Billie French White in SW Ontario let me know!

Playing with plates

So I'm really liking this rockstar french and I don't really want to paint over it.  But I'm okay with stamping over it, or around it...

This is terrible but I was just trying some different things.  I stamped with Pure Ice Silver Mercedes and plate BM201.  Then I defined the line with black striping polish and finished with a light blue gem.  This lasted 10 seconds before I took it off.

Now this one I actually liked:

I'm not usually a fan of the animal print designs but I liked this because it doesn't really diminish the glitter underneath.  I used Wet and Wild Black Creme with BM219.  This one I wore for a few days.

Sick of blue yet?

This is one coat of Gosh Deep Sea Blue.  This polish came from the mini set I bought on Boxing Day.

In comparison to a regular Gosh polish at 8ml, the mini is 5ml.  So not a bad deal since it's more than half the size.

I stamped it with my new Showcase plate B89 again and Pure Ice Silver Mercedes.  I love this shade of blue, very dark but still clearly blue.  Easily my favourite of all the blues I've worn recently.  This may even be a great replacement for my beloved Revlon Street Wear in Midnight.

Okay now seriously, I need to lay off the blue for a bit.

One last holiday mani

I was a bad girl and didn't update my blog during the holidays.  In fact I barely had any internet access at all and I didn't even mind it.

So here's the last holiday mani I did:

This is one coat of Wet and Wild's Blue Wants To Be A Millionaire over RCM Drop Dead Gorgeous.  Subtly sparkly but very gritty...ugh.

I stamped it with one of my new Showcase plates B89 with Pure Ice Silver Mercedes and tried out my new Migi Nail Art Pens in White.

My opinion after using 2 of these pens?  The white literally runs right out of the pen tip.  The black barely comes out no matter how hard I squeeze.  I would never have purchased them for myself and I can't believe these sell for $30/set at Zellers.  Not worth it.

Just a quick stamp

So I'm digging this uv gel mani so much that I don't really want to paint over it.  I'm sure if this actually lasts the full 2 weeks this time I'll get bored with it eventually.

I decided to just dress it up with a quick stamp.  I used Pure Ice Silver Mercedes and BM223 with a little clear gem.

And one more shot of sparkly colour-shifting awesomeness!  This is day 3 of the Shellac/Gelish combo.  So far so good.

Layering with Gelish

I'm still loving my Gelish manicure.  There are so many awesome things about this.  One of the best things is that I can paint regular polish right on top without ruining it.  So since I was wearing a nice dark vampy colour I figured why not try some layering out?

So one coat on top of Gelish Bella's Vampire from L-R:
Pure Ice Mint Dream
Sally Hansen HD DVD
Revlon Pineapple Fizz
Sally Hansen Prisms White Turquoise

I wasn't satisfied with any of those combos so I removed them with non-acetone remover and my Gelish was still good as new underneath!

So then I picked out 4 more layering polishes from L-R:
Sally Hansen Opal Truth
Sally Hansen HD Byte
Pure Ice Busted
Sinful Colors Pearl Harbor

And the winner was....

Pure Ice Busted with a subtle stamp in Sally Hansen Insta Dri Lively Lilac and image plate BM01.  This mani flashes a bit of gold and green in it as well.  I wasn't really able to capture it well but I love it.  It's amazing to me that I can paint whatever I like over top of the Gelish and it doesn't even dull the shine when I remove it.  I'm so glad I made the investment.

Blinding blue

This is 2 coats of Orly's Stone Cold from the new Mineral FX line.  This polish did not need as many coats compared to similar polishes which makes me happy.  These are more expensive than the regular Orly line but I think it's worth it.  These types of polishes are so much easier to remove than glitter and it's definitely just as blingy!

So I stamped it with Pure Ice's Silver Mercedes and plate BM209.  Then I did a crappy job of lining it with a striping brush.  I wish I'd left it alone.  This post makes me miss my nails now that they are short :(  But on the upside, hey it's much easier to type!

Amazing green

This is Sinful Colors San Francisco in 3 coats.  This was the one polish I wanted so badly when I first discovered Sinful Colors and I couldn't find it until recently.  And when I did finally find it, it was a lonely bottle with spillage but I bought it anyways.  The colour is awesome, the sheerness is not.  I hate doing more than 2 coats of polish.

So I stamped it with Pure Ice Silver Mercedes and plate BM03 and oddly enough the stamping came out slightly golden.  So I added a gold gem to each.  I think it's a little bit too much but I did get a lot of compliments on this.

And a bonus shot of my Zoya Ivanka ring I wore with it.  Which also shows how bad my stamping alignment is...oh well.  I haven't made any new rings in awhile but I did pick up a new box of casting resin and I've got a ton of new polishes which will make fabulous rings so you may see some new ones here shortly.

Happy Monday!

This is one coat of Sally Hansen Insta Dri in Lively Lilac.  I picked up several of these a few weeks ago on sale.  This photo looks like a straight creme but it's not, it's got a shimmery finish to it.  I thought I would love this and I really do like the formula, love the brush too, but the colour leans far too pink for my taste.  So I had to mess with it.

I added a coat of Sally Hansen Nail Prisms in White Turquoise.  I liked it much better but it's still not 'me'.

It looked pretty awesome under my kitchen lights.  Too bad this wasn't how it looked all the time because then I would have left it alone rather than destroying it further:

I figured the best thing was to use a full coverage stamp to hide the fact my nails were pink.  I used Pure Ice in Silver Mercedes and plate BM208.  I do like the design a lot though so I will definitely use this one again.

So I'm in an unusually happy mood for a Monday but I'm gonna bitch anyways because look at this:

This is One Less Lonely Glitter on the left and Tru Passion on the right.  These are (WERE) dupes!  I have never seen a polish change colour like that and it's not even very old!  On one hand I'm happy that I don't own two of the same colour anymore but on the other hand I'm going to think twice about buying Studio M polishes from now on!

Another franken and yet another haul

I was going for a navy blue holo here which looked perfect in the bottle but when I put it on my nails it was more like a medium blue-grey.  I'm afraid if I add any more polish to darken it then the holo effect will disappear completely.  Anyways this is 3 coats of my franken.

Then I stamped it with Pure Ice Silver Mercedes and BM20.

Now for an awesome glittery haul:

Kleancolors from L-R:
Starry Blue
Black Out
Blue-eyed Girl
Chunky Copper
Born to the Purple
Green With Envy - seriously sick and tired of this polish name!

L-R:
Chunky Holo Purple
Metallic Green
Midnight Queen - looks promising for layering
Metallic Aqua
Metallic Red

The chunky holos don't quite thrill me but I bought one since everyone seems to be going gaga over them.  The metallics I bought for stamping.  These were about $29 shipped to Canada in total, so a little more than $2.50/bottle and no tax.  Pretty decent.  I don't want to post where I ordered them from because I'm having a minor customer service issue that hasn't been resolved yet but I'm sure most of you can take an educated guess ;)

Ahhh and now my polish count is well over 400!  Think it's time to slow down.

Franken fun

There is a surplus store near me that has a giant bin of Essie ridge-filling basecoat for $.25 each!  I bought 10 of them just so I could use the bottles for frankening and I'm down to about 3 bottles left.  So here is my fave so far:

I don't name my frankens nor do I write down what I'm adding as I go.  I basically have an idea what I want and try to execute it.  Sometimes it doesn't work and sometimes it does, like this one.  I was going for a lavender with blue shimmer and this is 3 coats.  It was a bit thinner than I'd like but it's worth it.

I first sponged a bit of Sinful Colors Verbena and then Pure Ice Busted over it.

Then I stamped it with Kleancolor Metallic Purple and BM208.  I should have just left it alone :p

DS Illuminate

So there are several salons that I stalk nearby who have 'bargain baskets' of OPI polish.  I've picked up a few gems here and there.  These baskets sometimes have silver-capped bottles but they usually contain DS Classic - a tan scattered holo which honestly doesn't appeal to me much, especially since it's very similar to Color Club's Love em Leave em, which I already own.  But the last time I browsed the basket down near the bottom...there was a polish that looked like DS Classic but wait!

Holy shit how awesome is that?!  This is DS Illuminate.  How the hell did I never see or hear of this polish before?  I'm guessing this color didn't get a lot of love since I'd never heard of it, but I couldn't wait to slap this baby on.

This is 3 coats and this polish is definitely a chameleon...

The green shimmer actually made my nails look dirty most of the time but I loved the look.  There really was only one stamp that was worthy of this colour...

It was a little loud for me to wear outside the house though.  I used Wet and Wild's Black Creme with BM221 and then dotted with Pure Ice's First Time.  This is probably the only time I will ever use that leopard print stamp lol.

Definitely Not So Blueberry

Seriously WTF Revlon?  It ain't blue and it sure as hell doesn't smell like blueberries.  This took 3 coats for full coverage.  The photo doesn't show it but it has a subtle pink shimmer.  If you're on a diet and trying to stay away from sugar then by all means wear this polish!  It smells like sugar.  In fact after about 15 minutes of wearing it I wanted to throw up from the sweet smell.  I even added 2 top coats, a stamped coat and a glitter coat and it didn't reduce the smell at all.

I stamped with Pure Ice's First Time - a moss green chrome polish, and plate BM202.  It pretty much turned out to be a hot mess so what else could I do but add glitter right?

My camera hates holo glitter for some reason.  It can't focus properly.  Anyways, this is a coat of Savvy in Tinsel which is pretty much a dupe for China Glaze's Fairy Dust.  I did actually wear this for a day because I was too lazy to take it off but Not So Blueberry will be going to my sister just like all the other polishes I hate ;)

Canada Day nail fun

So I brought my kit with me last Friday and did some nails for my family.  I only have two to show you  because some people don't know how to take care of their nails and I didn't want to scare you ;)

This is the Princess of Poo who painted her own nails with 2 coats of Elf Medium Red.  I stamped her with the maple leafs from the same plate I used on my own Canada Day nails - BM04.  Then I dotted with plain old black and white.

This is my Dad's cousin's daughter who is 16 I think.  I painted her with 3 coats of Orly's Charged Up and I stamped with Pure Ice's Silver Mercedes and BM06.  You can't really see it in this photo but I added a purple gem to the middle of the flower on each ring finger.  I loved doing her nails because she takes good care of them.  She was also a Konad virgin and now I've got her hooked.

We had a great but hot day on Friday.  Yummy food, only one obnoxious drunk and some pretty cool fireworks.  Not bad.

What's not to love?

Black.  Holo.

This is 2 coats of Golden Rose Paris 118.  The Paris polishes are much larger than the regular Golden Rose Holographic polishes so I'm glad that the black one came in this size.  It was very hard to capture the holo in this one but it's definitely there.

Most times it looks like the above photo.  This polish was also very goopy.  I'm afraid to use thinner in a holo polish.  When I put this on I realized that this was exactly what I expected My Private Jet to look like instead of the brownish non-holo version I found.  I'd be curious to see how this compares to the original holo MPJ.

I finally had some time to stamp this time around.  It's Pure Ice's Silver Mercedes and BM08.  I almost added a gem to it but decided against it.

Tomorrow is Wienerfest - basically a picnic for dachshund owners.  I've gone for the last 4 or 5 years with my Mom who has 2 dachshunds of her own.  They have a costume contest and wiener dog races.  It's always funny to see hundreds of doxies running around.  I may post a pic or two later on.  Have a great weekend!

An unexpected haul

One night last week after work my mother called to ask if I wanted to go shopping in Michigan.  I said sure and she said 'okay meet me in 15'.  Um, I didn't mean right this moment but who am I to pass up a shopping trip?

From L-R:
Love My Nails - All That (purple and silver square glitter with tiny teal glitter)
Pure Ice - Celestial
Sinful Colors - Pearl Harbor, Stella and Nicole
Confetti - My Favorite Martian

When I was in Florida I was excited to find the Confetti display but they didn't have My Favorite Martian which is the one I really wanted.  I wanted to buy more from this brand too but the display was pretty picked over.

From L-R:
Essie - Coat Azure and Sand Tropez (CVS clearance @ $4 each!)
Wet and Wild Fast Dry - Magic Trident, Ocean Grotto and Sea of Dreams
Studio M - Ms. Haute and De-luxe-cious (hmm, sound familiar?)
Sally Hansen HD - Lite (CVS clearance @ 75% off!)

These are the new Wet and Wilds from the Mermaid collection which has yet to show up in Canada.  The orange is totally not my style but it was so pretty in the bottle that I couldn't resist - in fact it ended up being the first one I used.  I was super excited to visit Meijers because I'd heard that they now carry CND...and they did!  But I was really hoping for Jade or Amethyst Sparkle and they only carried the red and gold ones :(  They did have the Sinfuls on sale 3/$5 which was pretty awesome though.

So as a parting shot, here is Magic Trident, 3 coats, pre-nail art:
